Managing Director of C Deokie and Sons Contracting Services, Chandralall Deokie (left) and President of the Guyana Olympic Association K Juman-Yassin yesterday inked the contract for the construction of phase one of the US$1M Guyana Olympic Association Complex

The contract, worth Gy$ 47,678,750, was awarded to C Deokie and Sons Contracting Services and according to the GOA President the first phase entails the laying of the foundation and the casting of the floor slab which are estimated to be completed in 14 weeks. The two-storey building will be constructed at Liliendaal, Greater Georgetown, spanning 236 feet in length and 73 feet in width.
According to Juman-Yassin, the ground floor will house a number of offices for affiliated associations of the GOA while the upper floor will house a hall that will accommodate 350 persons.
The GOA boss stressed that while the completion of the project is indefinite because of the lack of adequate funds, he is optimistic that when it is finished the complex will be of international standard.
“We have to take it in stages, if we had wanted we could have use 15 or 20 million dollars and put down a building and that may have satisfied some persons in some quarters but we look at it and we decided in the interest of the long term of the association that comprised the sporting fraternity and the GOA that we need to put down a building in which all Guyana could be proud of,” according to the lawyer.
Yassin expressed his pleasure at the GOA being able to commence the first phase of the project, following several enquiries in the sporting fraternity for many years about the building of the complex.
“There was a lot of talk that the GOA was not heading into the right direction but what people need to understand that the GOA has no business and depends solely in raising its own finances.”
Meanwhile, the GOA President is calling on the government and corperate Guyana for assistance. Colonel John Lewis, President of the Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) will oversee the construction of the project. A first payment of Gy$ 7,151,812 was handed over yesterday to the contractor who is expected to commence construction work on phase one by Monday.
